About Me

I was born and grew up in Sydney. My initial academic training was in mathematics and computer science. I then did a PhD in applied mathematics and pursued a career as a mathematician and scientist.

In 1998 I changed direction, and I spent the next ten years lecturing in computer science and software engineering at the Australian National University. In the last few years I have done some research and development work in the area of digital preservation. In 2009 I worked as a research analyst for the Australian National Data Service.

Through all my years working in higher education and research, I always felt that there was something missing, and in particular that I wanted to do something in my life that put me in deeper contact with other people and that had a more positive influence on the world.

Counselling and Psychotherapy

In 2006 & 2007 I studied counselling and psychotherapy at the Jansen Newman Institute in Sydney. At the end of 2007 I completed the Graduate Diploma of Counselling and Psychotherapy. In the two years since then I have worked part-time as a counsellor/psychotherapist, and now have more than 450 client hours. I intend to continue this work as my main occupation in Scotland.

I am registered with COSCA as a Counsellor Member, their second-highest level of accreditation. As soon as I have regular clients here in Inverness, I will seek full accreditation from the BACP and membership of the UK Register of Counsellors and Psychotherapists.

In my counselling work so far I have developed a particular interest in working with young adults. Perhaps this builds on my experience as a university lecturer. I have also worked successfully with survivors of various forms of childhood abuse and neglect. This is work that I find immensely satisfying and inspiring.

IT consulting

As well as working with Avigail in our counselling practice, I am also looking for consulting or other work in IT.

I am told that I have particular strengths in speaking (teaching/training/presenting) and in writing clearly about technical matters for a non-technical audience.

I am prepared to work in software development in any role.

I would like to get some experience working as a business analyst. I believe that my unique combination of skills and training — mathematics, computing and counselling — might prove to be particularly effective in the process of requirements elicitation and analysis, and in communicating between clients and software developers.

If you think you might be interested in employing me, please read my Curriculum Vitae or simply contact me by any of the methods given on our Contact Page.
