14th March 2010 — New brochure

As part of our preparations for opening our counselling practice in Inverness, we now have a new brochure. You can download a PDF from the box on the right-hand side of this page.

We are in the process of looking for rooms to work from and are also planning a weekend workshop on grief and adjustment to change for some time in late May. We will upload the brochure for the workshop as soon as we have arranged a venue and have firm dates. More soon...

23rd January 2010 — We're here!

More than six years after we first started planning, we finally arrived in the UK on Monday the 18th of January and in Inverness on Thursday the 21st. We've already bought — and insured — a car. The next practical steps for us are to look for a house to rent and for ways to get started with our work.

At the same time we find ourselves plunged into the demanding process of adjusting to the shocking change we've initiated: uprooting ourselves from our lives in Canberra, travelling to the opposite side of the globe and dropping ourselves into a completely new country, climate, season and society. Luckily Avigail has written a very useful guide to this process, which is available from the Resources page of this web site. We are aware that we need to give ourselves enough time and to be patient with the uncomfortable feelings that come up.

Inverness is a beautiful city and we find the people here very friendly and helpful. We look forward to becoming members of this community in time.

22nd December 2009 — We now have an address in Scotland

See the Contact Page for details of how to contact us once we reach Inverness in January. We have organised a mailing address, a fax number and temporary mobile phone numbers.

Our plans are progressing well. We'll be there in a month.

24th November 2009 — Finally moving to Scotland

Good news! We are finally moving to Scotland. We are leaving Australia on Sunday the 17th of January 2010 and will arrive in Inverness on the 21st of January after a couple of days in London. It’s been a long delay of more than a year and we are now looking forward to finally starting our new life in the Scottish Highlands.

We haven’t sold our house yet, and are going with ‘Plan B’. We will rent out our Canberra property until we are able to sell it, and will rent a house for 6 to 12 months in the Highlands. We are shipping our two cats Fritz and Laura to Scotland as well and will need to find a house where the landlords don’t mind cats. They are very domesticated and well-behaved house cats.

We have been warned repeatedly that it is cold in Scotland, and we will be arriving in the middle of winter. But we look forward to that. We both like colder weather and are in desperate need of relief from the relentless summer heat in Canberra.

Stay tuned.

28th June 2009 — Still here

We are still here, almost six months after the date last December when we originally hoped to leave Australia...

To our disappointment we haven’t yet sold our house, although it’s been on the market for almost a year now. Our plans are still firm and we still intend to come to Scotland as soon as we can. But since we need the money from our property in order to move, we have no choice but to wait until we receive an offer that will enable us to carry out our plans. We don’t really enjoy this and feel a bit stuck, but no one could have predicted the global financial crisis and we didn’t anticipate its effect on us personally.

It seems that the property market is now picking up a bit in Canberra so we are optimistic, and hope that we’ll sell soon.

Stay tuned.

Ian and Avigail

24th November 2008 — Why Scotland and what’s happening with our plans?

Ever since we started to tell people that we want to move to Scotland, people have asked us ‘Why Scotland?’ It’s a really good question but it doesn’t have an easy answer. Ian and I spontaneously started to talk about leaving Australia around 5 years ago. Scotland emerged in our conversations and our dreams somewhere along the way. We can’t say exactly when and how. It just did.

Not only did we recognise that Scotland was our destination, we also knew instinctively that we need to go to the Highlands, to Inverness. Both of us are quite grounded people with a scientific mind and this seemed very strange to us. Why Scotland and why Inverness? We had no answers other than a kind of a gut feeling, a sense of calling or being drawn there... Read more

13th November 2008 — Change of plans

Today is one month before we were planning to close our practice in Canberra in preparation for our move to Scotland. Unfortunately however, we haven’t been able to sell our house — no doubt as a result of the financial crisis — and so we have been forced to postpone everything. We now hope to make the move in March 2009, but even this depends on being able to sell our house before then. We are definitely still coming to Inverness, just not quite as soon as we had hoped.
